Iran European Union Tighten sanctions

swedish council presidency

The European Union has tightened its sanctions against the Islamic Republic following the most recent executions in Iran. However, Federal foreign minister Baerbock's call for the Revolutionary Guards to be labeled as "terrorists" did not result in any action being taken.

New sanctions against Iran have been agreed upon by the member states of the European Union (EU), according to the Swedish Council Presidency. Without providing further information, it stated on Twitter that these would be directed against "those who promote the suppression.".

Against protesters who are demonstrating against the government across the nation since mid-September, the leadership of the Islamic Republic has used a combination of mass arrests and executions. Borrell wants to maintain the possibility of further discussions regarding the nuclear agreement with Iran. Nearly 100 people are listed on the EU sanctions list.

The EU was urged to exert more pressure on Tehran by France and Belgium. According to Catherine Colonna, France's foreign minister, Iran is holding "hostages" people from Europe.

The release of French and Belgian citizens who have been detained in Iran for months is being demanded by their respective governments.
