Iran EU tightens sanctions after fresh executions

targets 18 accountable individuals

The European Union has further tightened its sanctions against the Islamic Republic in response to the most recent executions in Iran. In total, 37 additional Iranian officials and organizations were added to the sanctions list by the EU's foreign ministers on Monday in Brussels, according to diplomats.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have not been designated as "terrorists," as has been suggested. The EU had received a warning from Tehran not to take this action.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, whose nation is currently in charge of the EU Council Presidency, said, "The EU strongly condemns the brutal and disproportionate use of force by the Iranian authorities against peaceful demonstrators.". Diplomats claim that the fourth set of sanctions, which the foreign ministers approved, targets 18 accountable individuals and 19 organizations and places asset and entry freezes on their property.

The EU sanctions list includes members of the Revolutionary Guards as well as nearly a hundred other names. Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) stated in Brussels that "the Revolutionary Guards terrorize their own population every day.".

According to diplomats, the EU is also responding to the execution of four people who had been given death sentences in connection with the anti-government protests. high legal requirements for designation as a terrorist group Baerbock was hesitant to agree to the European Parliament's and her Green Party's demands that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards be added to the EU's list of terrorist groups.

The Green politician, who had originally called for the action herself, emphasized that it is a "more than complex" undertaking. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards are regarded as the most elite division of the country's armed forces. They were established in Iran with the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Josep Borrell, the head of foreign policy for the EU, believes that there are significant legal obstacles to an organization being labeled as terrorist. According to the Spaniard, a court must find the organization guilty of terrorism in at least one member state.

"After that, we can work on a European level, but first the court decision must be made. "The Iranian opposition claims that the EU is being overly accommodating to Tehran.

Borrell is thought to want to leave the door open for additional discussions regarding the nuclear agreement with Iran. The EU was urged to exert more pressure on Tehran by France and Belgium.

According to Catherine Colonna, France's foreign minister, Iran is holding "hostages" people from Europe. The release of French and Belgian citizens who have been detained in Iran for months is being demanded by their respective governments.
